Condition grades explained: which is right for you?
One of the best things about buying refurbished is choice. Two people can buy the same phone model and pay different prices, simply because they chose different condition grades. The catch is that grades only help if you understand them, so let's clear that up.
At MoboSale we use six honest grades, running from flawless to well-worn: Brand New, Pristine, Excellent, Great, Good, and Fair. Every grade describes how a phone looks, never how it works. Whatever the grade, the device has passed our full check and is ready to rely on. The only thing that changes across the scale is cosmetic wear, and the price that comes with it.
What the grades actually measure
Here's the key idea: a condition grade is about appearance, not performance. A Fair phone works just as well as a Pristine one. It simply shows more signs of the life it had before you. So choosing a grade isn't about picking a better or worse phone, it's about deciding how much cosmetic wear you're happy to accept in exchange for a lower price.
That means there's no single right answer. The best grade is the one that matches what you care about. Let's walk through them from best-looking to most-loved.
Brand New
Exactly what it sounds like: a sealed, never-used device. No wear, no marks, nothing to grade because it has no history yet. This is the choice for anyone who wants the new-phone experience with the new-phone look, and is happy to pay the most for it.
Pristine
As close to new as a refurbished phone gets. Look closely and you'll struggle to find any sign it's been used at all. If you want something that looks immaculate but costs less than buying new, Pristine is the sweet spot.
Excellent
Looks almost new, with only very minimal signs of use that you'd have to hunt for. Excellent is a brilliant balance for most people: it presents beautifully, but you're no longer paying a premium for perfection.
Great
A few light marks here and there from everyday handling, the kind you stop noticing within a day of owning it. Great is where the savings really start to open up while the phone still looks tidy and well cared for.
Good
Visible signs of use, like minor scuffs or small marks on the casing or screen, but fully functional and carefully tested like every other grade. Good is the smart pick if you want maximum savings and aren't precious about a few cosmetic blemishes, especially if you use a case.
Fair
Our most-loved grade, with the most noticeable wear and the biggest savings to match. A Fair phone has clearly been used and it shows, but it has passed exactly the same checks as every other device. If your priority is the lowest price for a phone that simply works, this is it, particularly behind a case and screen protector.
How to choose the right grade for you
Start with two questions. First, how much does the look of the phone matter to you day to day? Second, will it live in a case? If appearance matters a lot and you keep your phone bare, lean toward the higher grades. If you'll cover it up anyway, or you simply want the best deal, the lower grades give you the same reliable phone for noticeably less.
It also helps to think about who the phone is for. A first phone for a younger child that may take a few knocks? Good or Fair makes perfect sense. An everyday phone you'll be looking at constantly? Excellent or Pristine might be worth the extra.
The honest bit
Whatever you choose, we promise to describe it truthfully. We won't claim a phone looks better than it does, and we won't overpromise that everything is flawless. Clear, honest grading is how we earn your trust, and it's how you end up genuinely happy with what arrives.
Every grade is fully tested, cleaned, and certified through our MoboCheck process, so reliability is never the variable. You're simply choosing how new you want it to look, and how much you'd like to save.
